USUST scientific project on the restoration of damaged railway infrastructure of Ukraine

Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies has launched an applied research project focused on scientific justification and development of measures for the renovation of railway infrastructure facilities damaged as a result of hostilities. The project will be implemented in 2026–2027 and aims to develop effective scientific approaches that will enable the rapid, safe, and technologically advanced return of critically important railway sections to operation.
 
The research topic is of strategic importance for Ukraine, as railway transport remains a key pillar of national resilience. The railway system provides passenger and freight transportation, humanitarian logistics, regional connectivity, and the stability of economic supply chains. Rapid restoration of transport infrastructure is a crucial factor for security, stability, and post-war recovery, and therefore requires not only practical solutions but also scientifically grounded methodologies and modern technologies.
The scientific supervisor of the project is Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Transport Infrastructure at the SEI ‘DIIT’, Dmytro Kurhan. The research team includes leading scholars and industry specialists, in particular:

  • Mykola Kurhan, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Department of Transport Infrastructure, SEI ‘DIIT’;
  • Vitalii Kovalchuk, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Department of Railway Transport, Lviv Polytechnic National University;
  • Nataliia Chernova, Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor, Department of Economics and Management,SEI ‘DIIT’;
  • Tetiana Serdiuk, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Automation and Telecommunications, SEI ‘DIIT’;
  • Ruslan Markul, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, Head of the Research Unit, USUST;
  • Ruslan Novik, Deputy Head of the Department of Military Training of Specialists of the State Special Transport Service for Academic Affairs and Research, Lieutenant Colonel, as well as other researchers.
The implementation of the project will contribute to the development of modern scientific solutions aimed at improving the reliability, safety, and speed of railway infrastructure renovation, while strengthening the expert role of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies in the country’s recovery processes.
