USUST representative joined discussion on the development of small modular reactors in Ukraine

On March 19, 2026, a roundtable discussion ‘SMRs in Ukraine: from strategy to implementation. Energy security and recovery’ was held in Kyiv. The event focused on the prospects for developing small modular reactors as one of the key areas for strengthening the country’s energy resilience.

 

Vitalii Anatoliiovych Zahilskyi, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Engineering Geology and Geotechnics at the SEI “Prydniprovska State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture’ and Acting Director of the Research Institute of Innovative Energy represented  the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies at the event.

The representatives of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, NNEGC Energoatom, NPC Ukrenergo, leading industrial enterprises, research institutions, and higher education institutions took part in the discussion. The participants focused both on the strategic vision for the development of small modular reactors and on the practical aspects of their possible implementation in Ukraine.

 

During the roundtable, they discussed the role of SMRs in strengthening energy security, key regulatory and technological challenges, safety issues, and the potential of these solutions in rebuilding the country’s energy infrastructure.

 

The participation of the USUST representative demonstartes the university’s active engagement in the professional dialogue on the development of energy sector, its role in training specialists and shaping a strong academic and expert community.

 

Following the event, a joint roadmap resolution is being prepared for the Government, summarizing the proposals developed during the discussion and outlining the next steps in this area.
