USUST ranked among the top 10 universities in Ukraine for research project performance
The Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies has been ranked among the ten most effective higher education institutions in Ukraine in terms of participation in competitive research funding programmes. According to the Ranking of universities’ performance in research project competitions based on the results of 2025, published on 22 June 2026 by the International Projects Centre ‘Euroosvita’, USUST took 9th place among 262 universities in Ukraine.
This achievement is particularly significant in the conditions of ongoing full-scale war, the reduction in state funding for science, and the increasing competition for national and international research grants. Today, the ability of universities to successfully attract funding for research, innovation, and development has become one of the key indicators of the effectiveness of their scientific activities.
The ranking was compiled using official open-access data from international and Ukrainian information resources, including the European Union’s Community Research and Development Information Service (CORDIS), the EACEA Projects Results platform, as well as data provided by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the National Research Foundation of Ukraine. The use of these authoritative sources ensures both the objectivity and the high credibility of the assessment results.
Unlike most academic rankings, which primarily evaluate publication output or citation indicators, the ‘Euroosvita’ ranking assesses the effectiveness of universities’ participation in highly competitive research funding programmes. The evaluation considers performance in Horizon Europe, Erasmus+KA2 projects, competitions of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine, state-funded research projects of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, competitions for young scientists, and international bilateral research projects.
Furthermore, the methodology applied to the 2025 ranking was strengthened by giving greater attention to international programmes, particularly Horizon Europe, thereby increasing the importance of universities’ international competitiveness. Under this demanding evaluation criteria, the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies achieved its place among the country’s top ten universities.
According to the 2025 results, USUST won 17 research projects, demonstrating one of the strongest performances among Ukrainian higher education institutions. The University also ranked among the national leaders in terms of the diversity of competitive funding programmes represented and achieved success in five out of six ranking categories.
Among the University’s achievements are:
- 2 international Erasmus+ KA2 ;
- 6 projects funded by the National Foundation of Ukraine ;
- 6 state-funded research projects;
- 2 projects led by young scientists;
- 1 international bilateral research project.
This achievement is the result of the dedicated work of the University’s research teams, academic staff, early-career researchers, doctoral students, and students conducting research in the fields of metallurgy, materials science, chemistry, construction engineering, transport systems, aerospace technologies, energy, environmental safety, digital technologies, and the green transformation of industry. These research areas are of strategic importance for Ukraine’s post-war recovery, economic resilience, industrial modernization, and integration into the European Research Area.
The position of USUST among the top 10 universities in Ukraine for performance in competitive research project funding demonstrates its high level of competitiveness, capacity to successfully attract grant funding, and its ability to implement large-scale research projects in cooperation with both Ukrainian and international partners.
