USUST postgraduate students meet with the University leadership

On October 3, 2025, the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies hosted its traditional meeting with newly admitted postgraduate students. Nataliia Makarchenko, the head of the Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies Department, PhD in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, acquainted the first-year PhD students (third level of higher education) with the department’s structure, responsible coordinators at the educational and scientific institutes, and the key features of the academic process.

 

In her presentation,  Nataliia Petrivna provided a detailed overview of the regulatory documents underlying the training of Doctors of Philosophy, the educational and research programs, and the requirements for postgraduate students. She emphasized that the PhD studies last for four years, during which postgraduates are expected not only to master theoretical disciplines but also to carry out independent research, present their findings in at least three scientific publications, and prepare a dissertation.

 

In the current academic year, USUST  postgraduate department counts 730 PhD candidates in 18 specialties: 169 at DIIT, 198 at DMI, 182 at USUCT, 160 at PDABA, and 21 at PSAPCS.

Classes are scheduled to start on October 6 and will be held online.

 

The rector of the university, professor Kostiantyn Sukhyi, welcomed the postgraduate students at the beginning of a new academic year, wishing them inspiration and fruitful reserach. He emphasized that the main mission of the university is to train highly qualified specialists capable of advancing modern science and education. The rector encouraged the PhD students to work diligently, maintain active cooperation with their academic supervisors, participate in conferences, and publish their research findings.

 

After the meeting with the first-year PhD students, a follow-up conference was held for  the second, third and fourth-year postgraduates. During the event, Nataliia Makarchenko presented the procedure for training of PhD degree applicants, the requirements for dissertation preparation, and the regulations on specialized academic councils at USUST.
