USUST joins the National Unity Radio Dictation

On October 27, 2025, the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies joined the nationwide initiative – the National Unity Radio Dictation, an annual event launched by Ukrainian Radio back in 2000. For a quarter of a century, this tradition has united Ukrainians across the world by a shared love for their native language, culture, and national identity.

This year’s dictation had a powerful title ‘One must live!’ The text was written by Yevheniia Kuznetsova, a writer, translator, and scholar, known for her novels ‘Ask Miechka’, ‘The Ladder’, and her research ‘Language as a sword: how the soviet empire spoke’. The dictation was read by Natalia Sumska, People’s Artist of Ukraine, renowned theater and film actress.

All educational and scientific institutes and structural units of the university joined the dictation, both offline and online.

In the main building of the institute, the atmosphere was focused and solemn. Before the dictation began, participants recalled the history of the National Unity Radio Dictation, discussed the power of the Ukrainian language, and reflected on its role in shaping national consciousness.

During the dictation, everyone listened attentively to the text, and afterwards, students and lecturers shared their impressions and discussed rarely used words that appeared in the text.

The administration of the SEI  ‘USUCT’, led by Prof. Olha Serhiivna Sverdlikovska, created a welcoming and supportive environment for the event, which became a wonderful opportunity to unite the university community.

The participants of the SEI “PSACEA’ joined the Radio Dictation online via the Teams platform. The event brought together students and lecturers in a shared aspiration to support the Ukrainian language and national traditions.

After completing the dictation, participants lively discussed unusual words such as ‘dopiru’, ‘tytiatko’, and ‘kyiakhy’, sharing their impressions and interpretations.

The event was joined by Prof. Halyna Yevsieieva, Vice-Rector for Vice-Rector for Academic, Student and Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Sc. in Public Administration, who coordinated the participation of the entire USUST community, and Assoc. Prof. Olena Barannyk, head of the department of Ukrainian Studies, Documentation and Information Activities, who moderated the online meeting at the institute.

Philologists from the department of Ukrainian Studies, Documentation and Information Activities invited participants to review and compare their texts, and to analyze together the most interesting linguistic structures encountered in the dictation.

The staff of the university library traditionally joined the National Unity Radio Dictation at their workplaces. For the team, this event was not only a language practice, but also a symbolic expression of unity with millions of Ukrainians around the world.

Despite some technical broadcasting difficulties, everyone coped with the text successfully and finished the dictation with a sense of pride and accomplishment. The library staff shared their reflections, emphasizing that such events remind us of the power of the word in shaping national identity and cultural consciousness.
The 2025 National Unity Radio Dictation once again proved that the Ukrainian language is not merely a means of communication but also a powerful symbol of unity and spiritual resilience of our people.

The USUST community is grateful to all participants – students, lecturers, staff, and organizers for joining this meaningful event. Let us continue to unite around the Ukrainian word, as it preserves our memory, strength, and faith in a shared future!
