USUST hosts the ‘Atomic facility 2100: Design the energy of the future’ competition

On 22 May 2026, the All-Ukrainian Concept Design Competition “Nuclear Facility 2100: Design the Energy of the Future” was held at the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies on the premises of the SEI PSACEA. The event was dedicated to developing a modern vision of nuclear energy and shaping new approaches to the design of future energy infrastructure. Students from universities across Ukraine took part in the competition.

The competition was organized by the Research Institute “Innovative Energy” of the Scientific Center for Innovative Materials and Technologies of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies and the Dnipro branch of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society.

The main goal of the initiative was to engage students in solving complex interdisciplinary challenges. Participants had the opportunity to combine knowledge of architecture, engineering, and energy technologies to create modern concepts for next-generation critical infrastructure facilities.

As part of the competition, students developed their own concepts for a nuclear power plant of the future. The competition projects included the creation of visual solutions for the exterior of the facilities, their harmonious integration into the surrounding environment, as well as a detailed description of the architectural and technological features of the proposed ideas.
 
The entries were evaluated by a special competition committee, which included representatives of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies, the Ukrainian Nuclear Society, and JSC NNEGC Energoatom.
 
Representing USUST, the following members took part in the committee’s work:
  • Vitalii Zahilskyi, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor; Acting Director of the research institute ‘Innovative Energy” of the IMT Scientific Center of USUST, head of the Dnipro branch of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society;
  • Artem Rudin, Senior Research Fellow at the SEI ‘PSACEA’ USUST, head of the Dnipro office of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society;
  • Vladyslav Kovba, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor at the SEI ‘PSACEA’ USUST, deputy head of the Dnipro branch of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society;
  • Artem Sopilniak, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, head of the Department of Architecture at the SEI ‘PSACEA’ USUST.
  • Volodymyr Kholosha, President of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society;
  • Danylo Lavrenov, First Vice President and Executive Secretary of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society, head of the Office of the Chairman of the Management Board of JSC NNEGC Energoatom;
  • Khrystyna Lylak, Public Relations Director of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society.
Based on the results of the competition, the committee selected the winners among the participants:
  • first place and a financial award went to the team of Lviv Polytechnic National University, consisting of students Vitalii Bihun, Nataliia Honchar, and Iryna Chomko;
  • second place and a cash prize were awarded to Yuliia Kramar, a student of Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture;
  • third place and financial awards were won by Uliana Sabantseva and Mykyta Martimianov, students of the SEI ‘PSACEA’ USUST.
In addition to the main awards, all competition finalists will receive souvenirs and special incentive gifts from the Ukrainian Nuclear Society. An additional educational opportunity is also  prepared for the participants as a joint trip to one of Ukraine’s operating nuclear power plants. Future specialists will be able to learn about the operation of energy facilities, see the industry’s modern infrastructure, and find out more about the practical aspects of nuclear energy operation.
 
For the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies, such a competition is an example of effective cooperation between education, science, and professional community. Such initiatives help students not only improve their professional competencies but also develop a modern vision of the role of engineering, architecture, and energy in the development of the country.
