USUST hosts dissertation defense in economics focused on the digitalization of railway transport
On March 16, 2026, a successful defense of the dissertation by Oleksii Viktorovych Zaleskyi took place at the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies. Following the meeting, the one-time specialized academic council made a decision to award him the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of study 05 ‘Social and Behavioral Sciences’ (specialty 051 – Economics).
The defense took place at the educational and scientific institute ‘Dnipro Institute of Infrastructure and Transport’, USUST as a public presentation of the research findings in real time. The title of the dissertation was ‘Digitalization as a strategic direction for the development of railway transport’.
The dissertation addresses relevant issues in the development of the transport sector under current conditions. The study examines the formation of an integrated system of digital management for Ukraine’s railway transport, particularly under martial law. It substantiates the role of digitalization as a tool for improving operational resilience, safety, energy efficiency, and the competitiveness of transport services.
The academic supervisor was Tetiana Yuriivna Charkina, Doctor of Economics, Professor, and head of the Department of Economics and Management.
The one-time specialized academic council was chaired by Larysa Volodymyrivna Martseniuk, Doctor of Economics and Professor of the Department of Economics and Management.
The professional evaluation of the dissertation was provided by the official opponents: Hanna Volodymyrivna Obruch, Doctor of Economics, Professor of the Department of Economics and Management of Production and Commercial Business at the Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport, and Viktoriia Petrivna Yanovska, Doctor of Economics, Professor, head of the Department of Economics, Marketing and Business Administration at the National Transport University.
The reviewers were Viacheslav Oleksandrovych Zadoia, Doctor of Economics, Associate Professor of the Department of Economics and Management at the SEI ‘Dnipro Institute of Infrastructure’, USUST, and Olena Viktorivna Pikulina, Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor of the same department.
