USUST athletes win medals at the Ukrainian Championships and International Athletics Meeting
Students of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies have once again demonstrated their outstanding athletic ability, impressively performing at both national and international track and field competitions. Representing the athletics section of the SEI ‘Dnipro Metallurgical Institute’, the student-athletes, coached by senior lecturer of the Department of Physical Culture and Sports Mykola Dziubenko, won medals at the Ukrainian Team Athletics Championships and at an international U23 match between the national teams of four countries.
On 6 -7 June, the Ukrainian Team Athletics Championships took place in Lviv. The competition was one of the key qualifying events for the national team and an important stage in athletes’ preparation for the major competitions of the summer season.
USUST students delivered particularly strong performances in the triple jump. Alona Chass, a student of group ME-03-22, won the silver medal with a jump of 13.15 m, while Ivan Furdui, a student of group ML-01-24, took third place with a result of 14.17 m.
USUST was also represented with distinction by Kyrylo Fatieiev (group EP-01-23) and Mark Nikolaienko (group UP-2111), who competed in the 200 m and 400 m sprint events.
Another remarkable achievement came on the international stage. On June 27, 2026, the city of Opole, Poland, hosted the International U23 Match featuring the national teams of Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. Traditionally bringing together some of Central Europe’s strongest young athletes, the competition is regarded as an important stage towards the European and World Championships.
Competing in the triple jump, Alona Chass delivered a dominant performance to claim the gold medal with a jump of 13.55 m – her season’s best (SB). She confidently outperformed her rivals and secured one of Ukraine’s four gold medals at the meeting.
Overall, the Ukrainian team won 17 medals at the international competition. Despite competing with one of the smallest delegations and facing challenging conditions, including a long journey and extreme temperatures reaching 36-42°C, the team demonstrated exceptional resilience and determination, earning four gold, seven silver, and six bronze medals to finish fourth in the overall team standings.
The athletes now face another busy period. On 1 July, the graduating bachelor’s students will sit the Unified Entrance Examination (UEE) in Lutsk, while the main sporting event of the summer will be the Ukrainian Senior Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place in Lviv on 10-12 July.
