USUST Academic Council: staffing issues, research initiatives, and new opportunities for the university

On April, 1, 2026, the regular meeting of the Academic Council of USUST was held in a hybrid format in the university’s Academic Council Hall.

The meeting traditionally began with a ceremonial part, including congratulations and awarding of academic titles and research degrees.

The title of Professor was awarded to:

Oleksandr Hryshyn, Professor of the Department of Theoretical Foundations of Metallurgical Processes
Illia Domanskyi, Professor of the Department of Energy
Vadym Kyselov, Professor of the Department of Pharmacy, Chemistry and Technologies.

The title of Associate Professor was awarded to:

Halyna Hrebeniuk, Associate Professor of the Department of Economics and Management
Mykola Osypchuk, Associate Professor of the Department of Physics and Applied Mathematics.

Дипломи доктора філософії вручили Бойко Юлії (спеціальність «Хімічні технології та інженерія»), Греку Олександру (спеціальність «Металургія») та Залеському Олексію (спеціальність «Економіка»).

Viacheslav Zadoia received the Doctor of Sciences diploma in ‘Economics and Management of the National Economy’.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) diplomas were awarded to Yuliia Boiko (specialty ‘Chemical Technologies and Engineering’), Oleksandr Hrek (specialty ‘Metallurgy’), and Oleksii Zaleskyi (specialty ‘Economics’).

After that, the Council proceeded to the items on the agenda. Vice-Rector for Research, Professor Yurii Proidak, presented the list of academic staff nominated for the award of academic titles, after which their candidacies were included in the ballots for voting.

Particular attention was given to the nomination of a research work for the Borys Paton National Prize of Ukraine. The Academic Council unanimously supported the submission of the work and, by secret ballot, approved the composition of the team of authors.

First Vice-Rector, Professor Anatolii Radkevych, reported on the results of the course ‘Academic integrity: an online course for teachers’. Nearly 800 academic and teaching staff members successfully completed the training and received certificates. The Academic Council unanimously recognized these results as professional development with the corresponding credits awarded.

Про роботу докторських спеціалізованих вчених рад доповіла завідувач відділу аспірантури та докторантури, доцент Наталя Макарченко. Вона акцентувала увагу на необхідності розміщення актуальної інформації про діяльність рад на офіційному сайті УДУНТ, оскільки відповідно до вимог МОН України вони функціонують на рівні університету, а не окремих інститутів. Також було зазначено, що частина рад потребує повторного затвердження для коректного оформлення документації.

Важливим питанням стало затвердження «Положення про принципи використання технологій штучного інтелекту в УДУНТ», яке представив керівник ННЦ забезпечення якості освіти, доцент Сергій Гришечкін. Документ враховує принципи академічної доброчесності, визначає правила використання ШІ та відповідальність за їх порушення. Після обговорення його було одноголосно підтримано.

Також Сергій Гришечкін подав на розгляд питання про надання грифу «Рекомендовано Вченою радою УДУНТ» підручнику «Надійність та технічна діагностика», том перший, авторів Дмитра Бобиря, Михайла Капіци, Олександра Очкасова та Романа Рибалки. Рішення підтримано одноголосно.

Відповідальний секретар приймальної комісії УДУНТ, доцент Сергій Байдак доповів про оновлення Положень приймальної комісії університету з урахуванням змін у структурі УДУНТ та нових вимог Міністерства освіти і науки України, зокрема щодо скасування мотиваційних листів.

Далі проректор з науково-педагогічної роботи, рекламно-інформаційної діяльності та комунікацій, професор Ольга Рижова звернула увагу на активізацію профорієнтаційної роботи в ліцеях і коледжах, а також на необхідність роботи з випускниками бакалаврату, які планують вступати до магістратури. Вона наголосила, що цього року обов’язковою умовою вступу є складання іспиту з іноземної мови, у зв’язку з чим в університеті відкриваються підготовчі курси у змішаному форматі. Також було підкреслено важливість роботи з підприємствами щодо вступу за ваучерами.

The issues related to the training of the third-level applicants (PhD students) were also presented by Professor Yurii Proidak. The Council considered changes in academic supervisors, the approval of reviewers, the composition of one-time specialized academic councils, as well as matters related to the publication of collective monographs, academic journals, and the formation of editorial boards. All decisions were supported unanimously.

Head of the Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies Department, Associate Professor Nataliia Makarchenko, reported on the work of the specialized doctoral academic councils. She emphasized the need to publish up-to-date information on the activities of these councils on the official USUST website, in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, they operate at the university level rather than at the level of individual institutes. It was also noted that some of the councils require reapproval in order to ensure proper processing of documentation.

Another important item on the agenda was the approval of the ‘Regulations on the principles of using AI technologies at USUST’, presented by Associate Professor Serhii Hryshechkin, head of the Research and Training Center for Education Quality Assurance. The document takes into account the principles of academic integrity, defines the rules for the use of AI, and responsibility for violations. Following discussion, it was unanimously approved.

Serhii Hryshechkin also submitted for consideration the issue of granting the endorsement ‘Recommended by the Academic Council of USUST’to the textbook ‘Reliability and Technical Diagnostics’, Volume One, authored by Dmytro Bobyr, Mykhailo Kapitsa, Oleksandr Ochkasov, and Roman Rybalka. The decision was supported unanimously.

Associate Professor Serhii Baidak, executive secretary of the USUST Admissions Committee, reported on updates to the Regulations of the Admissions Committee, taking into account changes in the structure of USUST and new requirements of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, including the cancellation of motivation letters.

Next, Vice-Rector for Research and Academic Affairs, Advertising and Information Activities, and Communications, Professor Olha Ryzhova, drew attention to the need to intensify career guidance and outreach activities in lyceums and colleges, as well as to work more actively with bachelor’s degree graduates planning to apply for master’s programmes. She emphasized that this year a foreign language examination is a mandatory admission requirement, and in response the university is launching preparatory courses in a blended format. She also highlighted the importance of cooperation with enterprises regarding admission through the voucher scheme.

The Council also announced an upcoming AI Challenge for lyceum students, the university’s participation in the Education City event, and preparations for a new artistic venue within Sakura Fest, where student teams from the university’s institutes will be able to present their creative projects.

At the end of the meeting, Vice-Rector for Research, Professor Yurii Proidak, clarified issues related to the distribution of basic funding. He also noted that, for the first time, the university had entered the top ten universities in Ukraine for inventive activity, ranking 8th based on the results of 2025. Since 2021, the university has made a significant leap, increasing the number of patent applications from 4 in 2021 to 69 in 2025.

The meeting demonstrated the university’s active development, strengthening of its research, introduction of modern approaches to education, and its readiness to respond to the new challenges facing higher education.
