The Department of Information Technologies and Systems at USUST celebrates its 25th anniversary

In February 2026, the Department of Information Technologies and Systems of the SEI ‘Dnipro Metallurgical Institute’ of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies celebrates its 25th anniversary. The department was established on February 16, 2001 initiated by the Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Oleksandr Illich Mykhalov, in accordance with Rector’s Order No. 20-A, to train specialists in the field of Information Control Systems and Technologies. From the very beginning of its activity, the department has focused on high-quality professional education, combining fundamental engineering training with the current needs of industry.

 

Over the past quarter of a century, the Department of Information Technologies and Systems has developed into a recognized center of IT education and scientific research. A strong professional community of academic staff, students, and alumni has been built here, whose members successfully pursue careers in science, IT industry, and related fields. Today, the department provides training for bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students in Computer Science and Software Engineering in the field of Information Technologies. The educational process integrates modern teaching approaches, hands-on training, and active research activities, meeting the demands of the modern  IT market and the digital economy.

 

One of the key areas of the department’s research activity is participation in international scientific and technical conferences, the conference ‘Information Technologies in Metallurgy and Mechanical Engineering’ in particular, which brings together researchers, engineers, and industry professionals to discuss current issues related to the application of IT in industrial production and complex systems.

 

The results of the department’s research are also regularly published in professional academic journals, including ‘System Technologies’ journal, which covers topics such as machine learning, data processing, and the practical application of modern IT solutions.

The department’s anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of previous years, to honor the academic staff and researchers who have shaped its history, and to outline the prospects for its further development.
