Student 3D Scanning Competition at USUST

The restoration of Ukraine’s architectural heritage and damaged infrastructure requires modern approaches and highly qualified specialists. That’s why Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies is actively implementing advanced digital technologies in the educational process. An important step in this direction was the acquisition of a modern Leica BLK360 3D scanner as part of the scientific and technical project “Chemical and Structural Design of Advanced Functional Materials”, implemented with the support of the European Union within the “Horizon 2020” program.

Thanks to this equipment, based at the CREATE Collective Use Center and the international Erasmus+ “The BRIDGE” project, the “CREATE 3D SCAN” student competition was launched. Its goal is to help young people master digital modeling and 3D scanning skills for designing and restoring buildings.

From February 21 to March 28, 2025, 6 teams worked with mentors on real objects: educational auditoriums of the SEI PSACEA, historical buildings, and elements requiring restoration. The scanning results were used to create Revit models of the university’s grand assembly hall, the Academic Council conference hall, remains of the old Katerynoslav garrison church, and the historical building of the Chernihiv Regimental Chancellery (Mazepa’s House). Special recognition goes to students from the Chernihiv Polytechnic National University who completed 3D scanning of this nationally significant monument.

During the training sessions and competition, students were able to not only master point cloud collection technology but also learn to work on recreating BIM models using software such as Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and ArchiCAD.

On March 31, 2025, the final project presentation took place in the SEI PSACEA conference hall, where participants demonstrated the results of their 3D research.
