Internship of USUST Architecture Faculty Professors in France

In November-December 2024, professors of the Architectural Faculty of SEI PSACEA of Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies, Kateryna Kharchenko and Tetiana Suvorova, underwent an internship at the Higher National School of Architecture in Saint-Étienne (ENSASE) — one of France’s leading architectural schools.

This internship marked a significant step forward in enhancing the training of world-class specialists in Ukraine. The project was realized with the support of Ukraine’s friends: the Ambassador of France to Ukraine, Etienne de Poncins; Cultural Advisor Olivier Jacquot; ENSASE Director Cédric Libert; exchange program curator Marc Haimans; and French Institute in Ukraine.

During the internship, the professors familiarized themselves with modern teaching methodologies, student projects, and research seminars addressing current challenges in the urban environment, including ecological, demographic, and social crises. Particular attention was devoted to sustainable architectural solutions and the role of architects in shaping high-quality living conditions — a topic of immense relevance for Ukraine’s post-war recovery.

Highlights of the internship included:

  • Creative workshops at ENSASE, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including laser cutting tools, fostering a unique creative atmosphere for design.
  • Numerous student models and prototypes that showcased a high level of creativity and innovation.
  • Interactive lectures and seminars on architectural design, architectural history, and social sciences.
  • The openness and intellectual freedom of students during discussions. ENSASE Director Cedric Libert, in particular, embodied the sophistication and mastery of an accomplished architect.

After returning, Kateryna Kharchenko and Tetiana Suvorova are actively integrating the acquired knowledge into educational programs. This will contribute to the training of new generations of architects capable of shaping the modern face of Ukraine.
