Intellectual Property Law Week Launched at USUST with Workshop on AI in Higher Education
On April 21, 2025, Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies launched its educational initiative “Intellectual Property Law Week at USUST” with a workshop titled “Digital Transformation in Higher Education: AI as a Driver of Educational Change.” The event was held via Microsoft Teams and organized by Dr. Halyna Yevsieieva, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Humanitarian Policy, together with the Department of Ukrainian Studies, Documentation and Information Activity, in cooperation with the Department of Student Educational Work and the newly established Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC).
April is rich in international observances related to creativity and intellectual rights:
- April 21 – World Creativity and Innovation Day,
- April 23 – World Book and Copyright Day,
- April 26 – World Intellectual Property Day.
For the seventh consecutive year, Department of UDIA of the SEI PSACEA of USUST has upheld the tradition of holding awareness events during this period to cultivate intellectual property culture among students.
This year, the initiative of the Department of UDIA was joined by the Department of Student Educational Work, and the educational project “Intellectual Property Law Week at USUST” was launched. The newly established Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) at USUST also joined the project. Among the Center’s main tasks are organizing various events, training sessions, and educational programs in the field of intellectual property and innovation, as well as promoting the development of intellectual property and innovation activities.
Active participants of the workshop “Digital Transformation in Higher Education: AI as a Driver of Educational Change” included postgraduate, master’s, and bachelor’s students – learners at all educational levels – who, together with UDIA faculty members, discussed current and controversial issues related to the use of AI in higher education, in particular:
- The imperfect ideality of AI;
- AI in education: development or degradation?
- To ban or not to ban;
- Use of AI by students with disabilities;
- University policy on the use of AI, and more.
A key outcome of the session was the initiative to form a working group to draft foundational principles for an AI usage policy at Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies.
