Historic building of SEI ‘PSACEA’ USUST damaged in attack on April 15
On the night of April 15, 2026, Dnipro once again came under enemy attack. As a result of a drone strike, several buildings of the educational and scientific institute ‘Prydniprovska State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture’ of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies were damaged.
The historic building of the Civil Engineering Institute, which is recognized as a cultural heritage site, was among the affected.
Construction of this building began in May 1930, most works were carried out by students and faculty members themselves. The building was completed in 1931 and 1932. For decades, this building has served as an important educational space for generations of engineers and architects.
As a result of the explosion, the roof was destroyed and the load-bearing structures were damaged. The assembly hall was completely destroyed, while the premises of the Department of Architecture, Academic Council Hall, computer laboratories, and teaching classrooms sustained severe damage. In total, approximately 1,500 m² of roofing was damaged, windows and doors were blown out over an area of about 2,500 m².
The scale of the losses and the emotional impact on the academic community are reflected in the words of Olena Ponomaryova, head of the Department of Computer Science, Information Technologies, and Applied Mathematics at the SEI ‘PSACEA’:
‘It was not just a strike on a building. It was an attack on everything I hold dear… The offices where just yesterday we drank coffee, laughed, and discussed projects… This is my home’.
In the morning after the shelling, faculty members, staff, and students came to the academy. They cleared broken glass, covered damaged windows, assessed the condition of the premises, and searched for solutions to restore the educational process as quickly as possible.

Anton Smyrnov, Associate Professor of the Department of Architecture, noted:
‘For nearly four years, together with our students, we have been helping others after attacks – inspecting buildings and assessing structural damage… Today, for the first time, we had to do this for ourselves’.
The strike occurred during the days of mourning for residents of Dnipro who were killed in a previous attack, which intensified the sense of loss and injustice.
Despite the destruction, the university community remains determined to rebuild. The management of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies is appealing to alumni, partners, and all concerned individuals to support the recovery efforts.
The university community is convinced that buildings can be restored, the most important thing is the people who continue to work, teach, and learn even under the most difficult conditions.
Every contribution, regardless of the amount, will help us return more quickly to normal conditions to study and work.
