Doctoral dissertation defense in Materials Science held at USUST
On April 16, 2026, the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies hosted the defense of the doctoral dissertation by Nataliia Filonenko.
The study entitled ‘Advancement of Scientific and Technical Principles of the Influence of Thermokinetic Factors on the Structure and Mechanical Properties of Aluminum- and Iron-Based Alloys’ was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences in specialty 05.02.01 – Materials Science.
The defense took place at specialized academic council D 08.084.08, at the SEI ‘Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology’ of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies.
The academic advisor of the dissertation was Volodymyr Volchuk, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, head of the Department of Materials Science and Materials Processing at the SEI ‘Prydniprovska State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture’ of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies.
The official opponents included leading experts in the field:
- Hennadii Bahliuk – Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Director of the I. M. Frantsevych Institute for Problems of Materials Science of the NAS of Ukraine, head of the Department of Wear-Resistant and Corrosion-Resistant Powder Structural Materials;
- Anatolii Sanin– Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, dean of the Faculty of Physics and Technology at Oles Honchar Dnipro National University;
- Hanna Zviahintseva – Doctor of Technical Sciences, Senior Research Fellow, and leading Research Fellow of the Department of Metallurgy and Welding Technology of High-Alloy Steels and Alloys at the E. O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of the NAS of Ukraine.
During the defense, the scientific originality and practical significance of the dissertation were particularly emphasized. In particular, the study established fundamental patterns for controlling the structural formation processes of aluminum- and iron-based alloys through thermokinetic influence at the early stages of material formation.
The author proposed scientifically justified approaches to predicting the phase composition and mechanical properties of steels, enabling improved wear resistance and durability without the need for ultra-high cooling rates.
The obtained results are of considerable practical importance for the mechanical engineering and transport sectors, as they open up new opportunities for developing structural materials with tailored performance characteristics.
