Defense of a dissertation for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Metallurgy at USUST
On March 16, 2026, the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies hosted the defense of the dissertation by Volodymyr Yuriiovych Kamkin. Following the public presentation of the research, the one-time specialized academic council made a decision to award him the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of study 13 ‘Mechanical Engineering’ (specialty 136 ‘Metallurgy’).
The dissertation was titled ‘Development of an integrated technology for the production of low-carbon steel for manufacturing high-quality thin sheet rolled products’. The academic supervision was provided by Oleksandr Hryhorovych Velychko, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, and Director of the SEI ‘Dnipro Metallurgical Institute’, USUST.
The research focuses on the development of an energy-saving integrated technology for the smelting, secondary treatment, and plastic deformation of ultra-low-carbon steel for the production of extra-thin sheet rolled products with enhanced properties. The proposed approaches provide for obtaining steel with an ultra-low carbon content and a minimal amount of harmful impurities, in line with current requirements of metallurgical production.
The defense took place in an open format and was conducted in real time. The one-time specialized academic council was chaired by Kostiantyn Heorhiiovych Niziaiev, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, and head of the Department of Iron and Steel Metallurgy at the SEI ‘Dnipro Metallurgical Institute’, USUST.
The professional evaluation was provided by the official opponents: Oleksii Mykolaiovych Smirnov, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor (Physico-Technological Institute of Metals and Alloys of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv), and Vitalii Petrovych Piptiuk, Candidate of Technical Sciences (Z.I. Nekrasov Iron and Steel Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Dnipro). The reviewers were Vadym Yuriiovych Selivorstov, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, and Anton Prokopovych Horobets, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor at the the SEI ‘Dnipro Metallurgical Institute’, USUST.
The members of the specialized academic council highly evaluated the results of the dissertation.
We congratulate Volodymyr Kamkin on this significant academic achievement and wish him continued success in his professional career and in the advancement of metallurgical science in Ukraine!
