On the eve of the Day of Unity of Ukraine, a charitable blood donation campaign called ‘Blood of Unity for the Defenders of Ukraine’ was held at the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies, initiated by the Rector of the University, Kostiantyn Sukhyi.

 

On 20 January 2026, more than 200 students and staff members of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies joined the blood donation campaign at the I. Mechnikov Dnipropetrovsk Regional Clinical Hospital. For each participant, this was a conscious act of support for Ukrainian military personnel and civilians who require blood transfusions on a daily basis, as even a single donation can be decisive in the fight for life.

 

In the donor hall, the participants of the campaign were welcomed by the hospital’s medical staff and personally by the hospital’s Director General, Serhii Ryzhenko, Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor. Thanks to his leadership and the dedicated work of the entire team, the I. Mechnikov Dnipropetrovsk Regional Clinical Hospital, since the first days of the full-scale war, has been functioning to a large extent as a military hospital, receiving the wounded every day and saving lives in conditions where every minute counts.

 

Addressing the participants of the event, Serhii Ryzhenko emphasized that blood transfusions are performed daily in intensive care units to save critically wounded patients. According to him, since 2014, a total of 23 tonnes of blood have been transfused at the hospital saving thousands of lives, including Ukrainian military personnel and civilians.

 

In turn, the Vice-Rector for Academic, Student and Humanitarian Affairs Halyna Yevsieieva, expressed her gratitude to the medical professionals for their daily dedicated work and emphasized that the university community is holding its own ‘line of defense’ away from the front lines  by supporting, assisting, and saving lives. She noted that today blood donation is not only a form of medical assistance, but also an act of civic courage and a symbol of the unity between the front line and the home front.

 

The charitable blood donation campaign became  another confirmation of the strong partnership between the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies and the I. Mechnikov Dnipropetrovsk Regional Clinical Hospital. Joint initiatives enable medical professionals to provide timely life-saving assistance to the wounded, while university researchers contribute to the development of modern medical solutions aimed at restoring the health of those affected by hostilities.

 

Unity is not merely a historical date. It is reflected in daily, concrete actions. On this day, such actions are hundreds of blood donations, each of which became a chance to live for those who are defending Ukraine today.
