Charity Blood Donation Campaign at USUST
On December 18, students and faculty members of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies participated in a charity blood donation campaign aimed at supporting wounded Ukrainian defenders. The initiative demonstrated the university community’s unity in their commitment to helping those who need it most.
The event took place at the Mechnikov Dnipropetrovsk Regional Clinical Hospital. During an impromptu rally, the hospital’s chief physician, Serhii Ryzhenko, expressed gratitude to the donors and emphasized the urgent need for donated blood:
Every drop of blood is vital for saving the lives of both military personnel and civilians. The need for it is indeed immense, as the number of those affected by military actions and shelling sometimes reaches dozens in a single day.
The university’s rector, Kostiantyn Sukhyi, also delivered a speech highlighting the importance of collaboration between the university and the hospital, drawing historical parallels:
Over a hundred years ago, during the First World War, the Mechnikov Hospital also saved the wounded. At that time, the rector of one of our university’s institutes, the Chemical Technology Institute, Professor Lev Pisarzhevsky, developed a unique medication based on metallic iodine extracted from algae and initiated its production. This innovation saved many lives during the war.
Today, our support is just as crucial for medical professionals. Students and faculty members are joining forces for victory and for the recovery of our country.
The unique aspect of blood donation during martial law lies in its critical importance for saving those affected by military actions. Proper preparation for blood donation, including adherence to dietary and regimen recommendations, significantly enhances its effectiveness.
Thanks to the campaign, blood was collected that will save the lives of dozens of people. This charitable event proved that even in the hardest of times, we can unite for a common goal!
