3D SCAN competition for digitising Dnipro’s architectural landmarks
The Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies is continuing its student 3D SCAN competition, in which participants are working on the digital reconstruction of Dnipro’s architectural landmarks using advanced 3D scanning technologies.
The first to join this ‘digital marathon’ were the pupils of the USUST Scientific Lyceum of Digital Technologies and Design. As part of the competition task, they carried out 3D scanning of the historic façade and the third floor of the Dnipro Philharmonic building.
Another team, led by Mariia Bieliaieva, worked on digitising the former ‘Mayak’ restaurant complex in Taras Shevchenko Park. The group also included students from the Dnipro State College of Construction, Installation Technologies and Architecture.
The team led by Kateryna Romaniuk has completed the field stage of work on its site – the old water tower at the intersection of Nauky Avenue and Zaporizke Highway and has already moved on to the next phase: processing the collected point cloud data and creating a digital model of the structure.
The competition is aimed at providing practical training in modern 3D scanning technologies, which are widely used in architecture, construction, heritage restoration, and urban planning. During the project, participants use professional laser-scanning equipment that makes it possible to produce accurate digital copies of buildings and structures. The resulting data is then processed in specialised software, where a three-dimensional model of the object is created.
Commenting on the progress of the competition, Artem Sopilniak, head of the Department of Architecture at the SEI ‘PSACEA’ USUST, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, noted that such initiatives demonstrate that the students and lyceum pupils are ready to work with real sites and advanced digital technologies during their studies.
The 3D SCAN competition has not only educational but also practical value. It enables the creation of accurate digital models of urban sites that can be used for architectural analysis, design, reconstruction, and the preservation of historical heritage.
Further stages of the competition are still ahead, including the scanning of other iconic architectural landmarks in Dnipro. The organisers are convinced that projects like this help students and school pupils develop digital skills, work with innovative equipment, and at the same time explore the architectural history of their city.
The competition participants prove that the future of architecture and construction is in digital technologies.
