USUST postgraduate student recognised for his contribution to the defence of Ukraine

At his challenging time for our country, postgraduate students of theSEI ‘Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology’ , USUST continue  successfully combining their research activities with important civic duty. Such example is Oleksandr Sukhatskyi, a postgraduate student at the Department of Physical Chemistry, who is currently defending Ukraine as a member of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

During his studies at the university, Oleksandr established himself as a promising young researcher with a serious commitment to science. In 2023, he entered postgraduate studies under the supervision of Viacheslav Protsenko, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor, and continued his research in the field of electrochemistry. His research focuses on the processes of electrochemical deposition of functional coatings from electrolytes based on low-temperature eutectic solvents. The results obtained may be used to develop modern electrocatalysts for the advancement of green hydrogen energy. Oleksandr participated in a state-funded research project devoted to the fundamental aspects of the development and functioning of electrocatalysts for hydrogen energy. Despite his young age, he has already achieved significant scientific results. His academic record includes eight articles indexed in the international scientometric database Scopus, four of which were published in first- and second-quartile journals.

In August 2025, Oleksandr Sukhatskyi was mobilised into the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Due to his military service, his postgraduate studies have been temporarily suspended. However, his connection with science has not been interrupted. Even while serving, he continues to work on academic publications and present the results of his previous research.

The professionalism, responsibility, and perseverance that supported Oleksandr in his research activities have also become important qualities in his military duty. Recently, he was awarded a certificate of appreciation by the command of his military unit for conscientious service, loyalty to the military oath, high professionalism, and personal contribution to the defence of Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity.
During his recent leave, the serviceman visited his home university, where he was warmly welcomed by lecturers, colleagues, and friends. For the USUST community, he is an example of a modern young researcher who demonstrates a high level of professional training, patriotism, and dedication to his country.

The story of Oleksandr Sukhatskyi is a vivid example of how Ukrainian youth combine their aspiration for scientific development with the defence of the state.

USUST is proud of its postgraduate student and wishes him good health, success in his service, new scientific achievements, successful dissertation defence, and the earliest possible return to peaceful life after Ukraine’s victory.
