Celebration of L.V. Pisarzhevskii’s anniversary at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

On February 20, 2024, a solemn extended meeting of the Scientific Council of the Institute was held at the L.V. Pisarzhevskii Institute of Physical Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The meeting was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Academician Lev Volodymyrovych Pisarzhevskii, the outstanding scientist of the late 19th – early 20th centuries, founder of several fundamental branches of modern chemistry, talented science organizer and educator, well-known public figure, and founder and first director of the Institute (in 1927-1938).

The gathering was attended by members of the Department of Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, led by the member of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, Director of the O.O. Chuiko   Institute of Surface Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician Mykola Kartel, Acting Rector of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Kostiantyn Sukhyi, leading scientists, employees, veterans, postgraduate students of the L.V. Pisarzhevskii Institute of Physical Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine and scientific institutions of the Department of Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, senior students of chemistry faculties from leading Kyiv universities.

The Acting Rector of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Kostiantyn Sukhyi, gave a welcoming speech and presented to    the L.V. Pisarzhevskii Institute of Physical Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine a textbook by Lev Pisarzhevskii “Fundamentals of Inorganic Chemistry.  Part I. Introduction to the Study of Inorganic Chemistry”, published in 1922 by the All-Ukrainian State Publishing House, and a periodic table of chemical elements created on ceramic material by the enterprise “Interkerama” (Dnipro) on the initiative of graduates of the Department of Ceramics, Glass and Building Materials of the Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology.

Modern chemistry – the theory of chemical structure, reactivity, mechanisms of inorganic and organic reactions, physical chemistry of solutions, electrochemistry, catalysis, photochemistry, adsorption, etc. – cannot be imagined without the electronic foundations laid by Lev Pisarzhevskii. The life and work of Academician Lev Volodymyrovych Pisarzhevskii will long serve as a bright example for many generations of chemists and educators.
